Driver Education Project

The aim of the project is to assist Aboriginal people to gain a driver's license.

Driving license offences are the third cause of imprisonment for this group in NSW. Aboriginal people face extra challenges in gaining a license; some of the reasons are low literacy levels, difficulty in obtaining suitable ID and gaining access to practical and relevant assistance.

The Driver Education Project team are Uncle Bucky Robinson, the first Aboriginal Driving Instructor in NSW, and Jesse Wone. The team can assist with obtaining valid ID, negotiating with State Debt Recovery Office, getting a Learner's license and with driving instruction to assist community members to gain their P plates.

For more information, visit our website at www.drivingproject.org. Jesse can be emailed at jesse@acenc.com.

Rally for Reconciliation

The NSW RTA now requires all learner drivers to undertake 50 hours of supervised driving. Finding suitable vehicles and licensed drivers can be a major challenge for Aboriginal and other community members.

Licensed drivers volunteer their time, and vehicle for a day, to assist disadvantaged community members to gain part of their required 50 hours.

The rally provides the possibility for non-Aboriginals to meet Aboriginal people, to have some one to one discussion and, possibly to do some personal reconciliation.

Rally for Reconciliation 14 was held on Friday 28th July 2006, with the approval and support of Richmond Local Area Command, NSW Police Service.
